Tuomo Kangasmaa's Sound Installation "Remember Uuno Kailas" at Oulu Museum of Art

TUOMO KANGASMAA: Remember Uuno Kailas 2016
Photo: Mika Friman

Tuomo Kangasmaa's Sound Installation "Remember Uuno Kailas"  presented at Oulu Museum of  Art 18 June 2016 – 8 January 2017. as a part of Hiukkavaaraaa -exhibition.
The Hiukkavaara garrison, located approximately six kilometres from Oulu city centre, has had many faces since 1957, when the non-commissioned officer school and the engineer company moved there. Since 1963, the garrison in the middle of the forest housed the entire Northern Brigade. The formerly closed area was given a new life in 1998, when facilities freshly vacated from conscript training turned into studios, rehearsal rooms, workshops and other spaces for dozens of artists, hundreds of bands and other users, and, as the latest arrival, asylum seekers, for whom emergency accommodation was provided in Hiukkavaara in autumn 2015. The former garrison is now one of the biggest centres of creative activity in Finland, and is set to become the heart of a new residential area.

The majority of the more than thirty visual artists who currently work in Hiukkavaara have their studios in the former K2 barracks, now known as the K2 House of Artists, while some have their studios in what was earlier known as barracks K3. The artists have been very satisfied with the affordable studios, the peaceful environment and the community spirit, testified by projects such as the Hiukkavaara Piknik festival and the K2 Unplugged studio exhibition arranged annually for several years now. Numerous events open to the general public have helped downtown and nearby residents discover the unique community.

The exhibition in the Oulu Museum of Art features 12 artists, who have been invited to present their latest works. The rich and versatile selection features paintings made using various techniques, sculptures, photographs, installations of diverse materials, video and media artworks, material collages and paper cut-outs.

Forêt Shell by Tuomo Kangasmaa selected for the 25th Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival - Curta Cinema 2015

The festival takes place in Cine Odeon – Centro Cultural Luís Severiano Ribeiro and at Cine Arte UFF in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between November 4 and 11, 2015.
The film participates in the Remote Landscape programme.
“This special programme focuses on films that target the relations between individual subjectivities and the landscapes they inhabit. The programme’s selection has been crafted by the selection committee to reflect a multiplicity of worldwide environments and cultures.”
On Kangasmaa’s video, a French-speaking narrator recollects an event where a film director, who was popular in Finland but defamed by critics, stopped off at a certain service station. Forêt Shell is a cinematic microhistory created by the artist, trying to tie the lost service station to a wider context. The various ingredients in the story interpret Northern Finland as a meeting place of different cultural epochs. The themes in Forêt Shell include locality, national popular culture, the origin of civilisation and essayistic film narrative.

UPPSALA INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2015

The experimental short films Forêt Shell (2015) by Tuomo Kangasmaa
have been selected for the Uppsala International Short Film Festival.

Forêt Shell presents an urban story and its setting in Northern Finland. There used to be a service station along a highway outside a small town, a popular stopping place for travellers and meeting place for the youth in the 1960s-80s. Local people called it “Forest Shell” (Forêt Shell in French). The examination of the urban story and personal memories from the service station of the past as well as historical facts blend into a narrative and myth on the video.

Fôret Shell will also be screened at the 28th Festival Les Instants Vidéo, organised in Marseille, France between November 6 and 29, 2015.

Forêt Shell is distributed by AV-arkki. AV-arkki is the Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art. AV-arkki distributes and promotes Finnish media art to festivals, events, museums and galleries worldwide.
